Maureen McKeeman

Meet Maureen McKeeman

I have been practicing law since 2011 and am experienced in numerous legal arenas. My diverse background in criminal law, civil litigation, and family law have led to a well-rounded practice where I am solely focused on the individual rights of my clients and pursuing justice.

I understand the emotional difficulties inherent in the justice system and believe that part of my job is to eliminate my clients’ anxiety about the unknown and explain the possible outcomes, as well as the law.  I am here to help them stay informed, prepared, and ready to address the important legal issues they face.

I have a wealth of experience in DUIs, felony and misdemeanor criminal defense, and civil litigation that allows me to give my clients the tools they need to make informed and intelligent decisions about their future. I pride myself on achieving superior results and take time to ensure that my clients stay focused on the important legal issues while helping them navigate through an emotionally draining time in their lives. I am also proud to have represented military service members and their spouses across Washington State.

While studying at Seattle University School of Law I was selected for a prestigious externship with the Honorable J. Robert Leach at the Washington State Court of Appeals, Division 1.  After graduating in 2010, I worked as a law clerk for the Honorable Michael T. Downes at the Snohomish County Superior Court. In 2012, I began working at the Snohomish County Public Defender Association where my practice focused exclusively on criminal law. During this time I obtained successful results for hundreds of clients in criminal hearings, criminal motions, at trial, and in other stages of litigation.

I am an active member of the Washington State Bar Association, the Washington Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and the Washington Defender Association.

When I am not working you will find me enjoying time with my family, hiking, reading, and traveling.

About Mckeeman & Miller

We are attorneys and counselors, seeking not only to help clients navigate their legal issues but seeking also to simply offer candid, practical, and compelling advice.  There is a distinction there and we hope to have the opportunity to let you experience the difference for yourself.

Our Mission
We pride ourselves on tenacious advocacy on behalf of our clients while at the same time encouraging practical, common-sense, financially sound decision making in resolving legal issues. We are creative and are unafraid to find solutions where others might be too afraid to look.
About Us
We believe that value is where extraordinary results and affordable advocacy meet, and we seek to provide that to every client who chooses to work with us. At McKeeman & Miller, PLLC, we do it differently. Contact us to see if we are a good fit for you.
What We Do
Between the two of us, we have represented clients in a wide array of matters from business entity formation to defending against felony charges. While we have experience in what is normally referred to as "transactional" work, we focus more heavily on "litigation" in its various forms.

Our Practice Areas

For our clients, a criminal charge represents one of the scariest ordeals one may face in life.  The consequences of criminal convictions can be far-reaching and can haunt a defendant for years, sometimes even resulting in the loss of certain rights for life.  At McKeeman & Miller, PLLC we understand what it takes to achieve extraordinary results. You need a great criminal defense lawyer who will be there for you and provide practical, candid, and thoughtful advice on your situation.  You need an attorney who will make sure you understand every step of the criminal justice system and how it affects your case. At McKeeman & Miller, PLLC, you will receive the personalized attention and outstanding legal representation you deserve.

With over 12 years of combined criminal and DUI defense experience, our knowledgeable attorneys are here when you need us.  From the moment we begin helping our clients to the conclusion of their cases, we offer practical solutions and the highest level of professional integrity.

As natives of the greater Puget Sound area, we are able to provide legal representation for individuals charged with a felony or misdemeanor offense in Kitsap, Pierce, Mason, King, Snohomish, and Jefferson counties.  Our work in these jurisdictions includes representing defendants in these counties’ district courts, superior courts, and municipal courts, including: Bainbridge Island Municipal Court, Bremerton Municipal Court, Edmonds Municipal Court, Gig Harbor Municipal Court, Port Orchard Municipal Court, Poulsbo Municipal Court, and Tacoma Municipal Court. If you have been charged with any of the following types of crimes, please contact us for a free consultation:

  • DUI
  • Sex Crimes
  • Drug Crimes
  • Property Crimes
  • Violent Crimes

At McKeeman & Miller, PLLC we have represented defendants in hundreds of DUI cases at every stage of proceedings from the initial post-arrest phone call in the BAC room through dismissal hearings.  When under investigation for DUI, the importance of the early decisions that you make and steps you take to protect your rights cannot be overstated. Often times you will not be allowed the benefit of speaking to an attorney while stopped on the side of the road but an attorney should be requested – repeatedly, if necessary – at every step of the investigation.  If under investigation for driving under the influence of alcohol, you will eventually be asked to submit to a breath test at a police station or jail at which point, again, you should ask to speak to an attorney. Depending on the outcome of the breath test (and whether you refused to submit to it or not), you may be facing a Washington State license suspension, even if you have an out-of-state license.  You will have the opportunity to challenge this suspension or revocation at a DOL Hearing but you or your attorney must submit the appropriate written request within twenty days of the incident.

If you are booked into jail and you are fortunate enough to bail out, you will need to return to court to appear before a judge in short order.  In many jurisdictions, including Kitsap County and its municipal courts, the first appearance will be held the next court day following a DUI arrest.  At this hearing, you will enter a plea of “not guilty” and the court will set conditions of release that you will need to follow while the case is pending.  At this hearing, the Court might even increase bail which would result in another jail booking until more bail is posted. The court might also order that you have an ignition interlock device (“blow-and-go” or “IID”) installed in your vehicle, which can be a problem for people who share vehicles or who drive employer-owned vehicles.  At this first appearance, you will also be told of your next court date which may be anywhere from three to six weeks later.

During this period, your attorney will need to begin conducting their own investigation and you should begin to take certain steps to proactively address the situation.  Because of the twenty day deadline to request a DOL Hearing and because of the fifteen day deadline during which you must respond to any other traffic infractions (like a speeding ticket) that were issued, it is easy to miss deadlines.  In light of this, it is always better to seek representation as early in the process as possible.

At McKeeman & Miller, PLLC, we take special pride in the tenacity with which we defend against DUI charges and we look forward to telling you how we separate ourselves from the rest of the pack.

TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS

At McKeeman & Miller, PLLC, we understand that the true cost of a traffic infraction, such as a speeding ticket, goes well beyond the price that the officer issued it for.  If you have extensive traffic-related history or you are looking for an attorney on behalf of a driver under the age of 18, you need to know that the consequences of simply paying a traffic ticket without talking to an attorney can cost a driver their license for months or even years.  We provide our clients with an aggressive, detail-oriented defense for an affordable price.

Whether one is involved in an accident or whether one has been subjected to the intentional bad act of another, it is more than enough to be victimized once.  Unfortunately, we have an insurance system and adversarial legal system that can end up victimizing individuals over and over again. At McKeeman & Miller, PLLC, we fight for individuals who have been injured in car accidents, by dog bites, and in a number of other ways.  Let us tell you how we can help.

Family Law

Divorce and co-parenting issues pose some of the most difficult problems for our clients and the law is not always well-equipped to handle the myriad issues that arise in family law cases.  At McKeeman & Miller, PLLC, we take a forward-looking, practical approach to resolving difficult family law, divorce, custody, and child support issues that our clients face. If you have a family law issue that you would like to discuss, we are happy to meet with you and determine whether we are a good fit for your needs.

Unlawful Detainer

We understand that many landlords who are fortunate enough to own rental properties do so because they need and rely on the income.  At McKeeman & Miller, PLLC, we have the experience to represent landlords in residential and commercial eviction (unlawful detainer) proceedings.  Because eviction proceedings are governed by statute in Washington state, the statutes must be followed to the letter which creates a number of potential traps for self-represented landlords and attorneys who lack experience in this area.  What’s more, local court rules and local city ordinances must also be strictly followed when trying to lawfully evict a tenant and a failure to do so can result in months of lost rental income. If you are a landlord with a tenancy-related issue, we would be happy to speak with you.

Department of Licenses Hearings

Our attorneys have argued and won numerous Department of Licensing Hearings on behalf of clients whose ability to drive was at risk.  Driving is crucial to many of us who need to make a living. In areas such as Kitsap County, Jefferson County, and Mason County that do not have the benefit of robust public transportation systems, one’s ability to drive legally can be the difference between keeping a roof over one’s head and not.
